DAY ONE
ARRIVE IN TIRANA
Arrival into Tirana, settled into the hotel before the afternoon opens onto the city on foot. Skanderbeg Square anchors the walk, past the Et'hem Bej Mosque and its clock tower, the Palace of Culture, and the Pyramid of Tirana — a communist-era monument reborn as a cultural space, a fitting emblem of a city that keeps its history close while moving forward. Dinner closes the evening at an unhurried pace.
Overnight — Tirana
DAY TWO
KRUJA AND THE ADRIATIC
North to Kruja, a mountain town built around the memory of Gjergj Kastrioti — Skanderbeg — and Albania's long resistance to Ottoman rule. The National Museum traces his legacy, the Ethnographic Museum the daily life around him, and the Old Bazaar beyond them holds centuries of trade in antiques and handcraft, best moved through slowly. The afternoon continues to Durrës on the Adriatic, its Roman amphitheatre and streets where Byzantine stone meets Italian elegance, before an evening walk along the revived Lungomare and the return to Tirana.
Overnight — Tirana
DAY THREE
SHKODRA AND LAKE SKADAR
North again, to Shkodra, long regarded as Albania's cultural heart. Rozafa Castle opens the day — a steep climb rewarded with Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman history stacked above the city — followed by a boat crossing of Lake Skadar, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve where the pace slows to match the water. Lunch is taken with the lake and castle in view, before the Ottoman-era Mesi Bridge and an unexpected stop at the Venice Art Mask Factory, where masks are still hand-crafted for Venice's Carnival. The day closes with a walk through Shkodra's pedestrian quarter.
Overnight — Tirana
DAY FOUR
APOLLONIA AND BERAT
South to Apollonia, one of Albania's most significant archaeological sites — an ancient Illyrian city whose ruins move through Greek, Roman, and Byzantine layers, its fortifications, theatre, and Nymphaeum standing beside a museum next to the 14th-century Monastery of St Mary. Berat follows, the City of a Thousand Windows and a UNESCO site in its own right. Lunch is taken inside Berat Castle's ancient walls, the Osum River and rooftops spread below, before a descent through the Mangalem quarter and across the Gorica Bridge. The evening turns hands-on, with a cooking session built around produce sourced from local farmers, followed by dinner in a traditional Berat restaurant.
Overnight — Berat
DAY FIVE
GJIROKASTËR AND THE SOUTH
Further south to Gjirokastër, a UNESCO town rising along its mountainside in slate-roofed Ottoman houses unlike anywhere else in the country. Gjirokastër Castle, the largest in Albania, holds centuries of stonework alongside more recent military relics — or, at a slower pace, the old town's steep lanes and small shops carry the same history differently. The road continues to Sarandë on the Ionian coast, where dinner by the water opens a quieter chapter of the journey.
Overnight — Sarandë
DAY SIX
BUTRINT AND IONIAN
History meets the sea at Butrint, Albania's most significant archaeological site and a UNESCO listing of its own — more than two thousand years of layered ruins, from a Greek theatre and the Temple of Asclepius to a Byzantine baptistery whose mosaics still hold their colour. The return pauses at Ksamil, where translucent turquoise water and a scatter of small offshore islands make a case for staying past lunch — a swim, or a few unhurried hours by the sea, before the evening return to Sarandë.
Overnight — Sarandë
DAY SEVEN
THE BLUE EYE
Inland, to Syri i Kaltër — the Blue Eye — a natural spring set deep in forest, its water shifting through shades of blue and turquoise that still feel faintly otherworldly. A gentle four-kilometre walk through the surrounding woodland sets the pace. The afternoon is left deliberately open, the evening left to Sarandë, at leisure.
Overnight — Sarandë
DAY EIGHT
A DAY ON THE IONIAN
The sea takes the day entirely — time at leisure along the coast, or further out by boat toward coves inaccessible by road: Aquarium Bay, Kakomicë Bay, Krorëzes Bay, Kepi i Qefalit, Soldier's Beach. There is no itinerary here beyond the rhythm of the water, before the return to Sarandë in the evening.
Overnight — Sarandë
DAY NINE
THE RIVIERA AND LLOGARA PASS
North along one of Albania's most dramatic coastal roads, past secluded beaches toward Porto Palermo and Ali Pasha Castle — a small triangular fortress set improbably above the water, memorable as much for its form as its setting. The road continues through Himarë and the village of Vuno, before climbing to the Llogara Pass, where a final sweeping view holds the Ionian Sea before the journey turns back toward Tirana, arriving by evening.
Overnight — Tirana
DAY TEN
HOMEWARD
A final breakfast in Tirana before the transfer to the airport — the journey closing not with a single image, but with all of them together: ancient cities, mountain roads, long tables, hidden coves, and the particular warmth of a country still often overlooked.
